Eight Days in Korea

By Mikyung Kim / Hong Kong

I got four wisdom teeth taken out in Seoul last Monday. It was a bit strange transitioning from constantly moving and doing a gazillion things in India one day to being basically comatose and immobile the next day in Korea. I was given the nickname “The Grinch” because my cheeks were so swollen and green from bruising, haha!

Travel Section says “Hello!”

Summer is upon us (well those not in Boston because we just can’t seem to catch a break. April Showers bring May Flowers… blah blah blah. It seems more like freakin April downpours to me. It’s May this Sunday so I want to see some flowers.) which means half of our staff is graduating and almost every single one of us is going on a trip some where.

As an international bunch, we are more than happy to share our travel stories in “Travel Diaries” and a little bit about the town we have moved to in “My Town.”

Our group is about to shift a little with new writers coming in (they’ve been waiting to finish school first) and all but 3 of the Boston Branch moving far away from Boston (so sad).

Hope you enjoy our new section and possibly get some ideas for trips!

Yes, this is very much a “being Asian” thing. Let me break it down for you.

Imagine emigrating to Uzbekistan and never being able to have a Slim Jim ever again. Furthermore the only Uzbek equivalent is chewy goat rectum. What a devastating blow! My friend, I too have a similar plight.

Coachella Couture

By Gabi Conti / LA

No, I did not go to Coachella. And although I tweeted “So many less D-bags in LA today. They’re probably all at Coachella.” I assure you that was partly out of jealously and partly out of the scientific fact that I knew at last one D-bag who attended Coachella. Also a fact, people liked that status update on Facebook.

So Coachella fashion, since it’s usually as hot as balls in the dessert mid April, Coachella fashion trends are usually a good indication of what you’ll be wearing this summer. You can probably trace the trends of Raybans, fedoras and flannel back to one of these music festivals.

A Review of Coachella 2011

By Julie Davis / Boston

Empire of the Sun

It was like walking on a dream watching Empire of the Sun.

Amazing performers Their music was perfect, I could definitely find myself swaying back with my mind just all into the music. They sang all the songs that I love from them really well. They had the best performance. The awesome and highly detailed costumes and dancers and choreography were the best part.

Ratatat

I hadn’t heard of them before but going to the performance in the mojavi tent was amazing. We posted up right in the front to get a good place to listen and feel the crazy bass of the beats. I ended up loving them. I am definitely going to go download their album now!

Dreaming About: Music Festivals

By Sarah Schneider / Boston

While I’ve been to quite a few concerts, I can only say I’ve been to one music festival. It was freezing, and I was slightly under dressed, but more than anything, I was ill-equipped.

After fighting my way to the front, I soon realized I was trapped. I’d have to burrow my way through the hordes of people to get to food and water, something I was not willing to do since Dylan was going on next. Instead, I begged the girl next to me for a sip of her water. She gave it to me, thankfully. Next time, though, so I don’t need to ask strangers like a person who wants to be drugged and murdered, I’m bringing my own backpack chockfull of water and Special K.

Ideally, it would be the beautiful Hunter Rucksack from Bill Amberg. Also ideally, I’ll be wearing Zara’s crochet dress and the House of Harlow 1960 earrings I’ve been coveting for months. Maybe by next year’s Coachella.

A Battle of the Coasts: Los Angeles vs. New York City

By Allie Ferrara / NYC

Welcome to Hollywood. For reference, Downtown Hollywood is a less anxiety-inducing version of Times Square.

Working and living in New York City winters are brutal enough to make any metropolitan denizen drop their briefcases and immediately book it for warmer scenery. I had this exact realization one January morning when the temperatures were registering around 15 degrees. “Los Angeles,” I thought to myself, “perfect!”

Dinner in the Sky

By Helene Hamady / Boston

What food doesn’t taste better with a view?

But as everyone knows, the second-to-worst thing is paying a fat bill at a restaurant that has bad food and a good view.  On the other hand, for restaurant owners, affording a nice view is pricey in itself.
